Lighthouse and Sightseeing Cruises

The South Central Shore of Lake Superior around Marquette is full of beautiful and historic places which are best seen from the water. Come aboard with Daybreak Charters and let Captain John show you places like the Huron Islands and Huron Island Lighthouse, Granite Island Light, Big Bay Light, Granot Loma, and the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse and Iron Ore Docks. Bring your camera and prepare to see some of the most beautiful and important pieces of Lake Superior history!

Huron Islands/Huron Island Lighthouse

Located 3 miles off the shore of the Huron Mountain’s and about 35 nautical miles from Marquette, lies the Huron Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge contains five islands, the biggest of which holds the Huron Island Lighthouse. Built in 1868, the tower sits 197 feet above Lake Superior and is surrounded by wildlife and unbelievable views of the rugged Huron Mountain shoreline. Dozens of Bald Eagles call these islands home, and can be seen nesting in the tree tops and hunting for fish along the shore.

Big Bay Lighthouse

First lit in 1896, this light sits 108 feet above Lake Superior and helps guide mariners along one of the most rugged and beautiful stretches of coastline on the South Shore. The lighthouse is now privately owned, and is now operated as a Bed and Breakfast.

Granot Loma

One word best describes Granot Loma…Unbelievable! This 26,000 sq ft log lodge was built in 1919 and sits on the rocky shore of Lake Superior, on Granite Point, about 12 miles North of Marquette. One of the most historic and significant places on all of Lake Superior, it has been featured in dozens of television shows and magazines, and is a National Historic Landmark. It must be seen to be believed!

Granite Island Lighthouse

Sitting on top of 2 ½ acres of Granite rock that rises from the bottom of Lake Superior lies the Granite Island Lighthouse. The tower, reaching nearly 95 feet above Lake Superior, was built in 1868 with the same rock that built the Huron Island Lighthouse and the Stannard Rock Lighthouse. The island is now privately owned, but island tours are available. Granite Island is about 3 miles offshore and 11 miles North of Marquette.

Marquette Bay Lighthouse

Built in 1866, the Marquette Lighthouse was considered by many mariners to be “the most important light on the lake”, and served as a beacon to guide the early steel ships around Marquette’s rocky harbors. The tower is 40 feet tall and sits almost 90 feet above Lake Superior. A local historian called the lighthouse “The most historically important building in Marquette.” The Marquette Maritime Museum sits next to the lighthouse and holds information on all the Lake Superior Lighthouses and monuments.
